Training for SLD Eligibility for Special Education

The Utah State Office of Education has provided new eligibility rules for determining if a student qualifies for special education services under the classification of Specific Learning Disability (SLD). Based on these changes, we have developed a training for specific special education staff/schools. We would like to invite the special education team members from your schools to attend the training module for this new process. We are encouraging that an assistant principal also attend. This half-day training will be conducted by combining high school feeders. In order to give school teams the opportunity to participate in a group while still providing for class coverage, the training has been set up so that each school will send half of their staff in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Please plan for the full day substitute teachers to switch between morning and afternoon groups. We recognize that Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) may work in multiple buildings and may not be available to attend the training on the assigned day of the secondary feeder.  If the SLP works in 2 secondary schools, the SLP should attend with their home base school. If the SLP splits between elementary and secondary, and is scheduled at an elementary the day of the secondary training the SLP may attend with another feeder. School Team Leaders please send a list of morning and afternoon participants to the Teacher Specialist assigned to your school by April 22nd. Special education will cover the substitute costs for training (Budget code: 1292). For more information, please contact Julie Brown at julie.brown@jordandistrict.org or 801-567-8200.

In 2016 the Utah Legislature passed HB460 which requires all School Resource Officers and School Administrators to attend annual training. The purpose of the training is to review and define the roles of disciplinary misconduct that is to be handled by school officials and delinquent offenses that should be addressed by the SRO's.

The State requires that one administrator and their SRO from every secondary school attend this training together. The training is free and will be provided in the Jordan School District on:

  • Tuesday, February 12th from 8:30-12:30 in the Auditorium at the ASB
  • Wednesday, February 13th from 8:30-12:30 in Room 129 at the District Office

Please click the attachment below to register for one of the sessions. If you cannot attend either of these sessions, please call Laneta Fitisemanu at 801-538-1044 to find a training at a nearby district to attend.

This year, the Incident Command System training is optional for returning administrators, and mandatory for all new administrators.  Please plan to attend one of the scheduled training dates at the Auxiliary Services Building, in the Presentation Room by the main entrance.

Medication Administration Training

Utah State Law and District Policy requires that all school personnel delegated to administer medication to students in schools must complete Medication Administration Training.

New employees who will be giving medication are required to attend the live training on Friday, September 28, 2018. Prior to this meeting, they need to view the online training, following the links at jordandistrict.org and posted under Educational Support, Nursing Services. Click on Medication Inservice (use a browser other than Firefox).

Employees who have attended this training and have a certificate of completion will not be required to attend this meeting. However, they will be required to recertify by viewing the online training video and completing the corresponding test available on the district website.
(see above)

Please identify staff members that should receive medication administration training. This may include head secretaries, office assistants, cluster teachers or aides, counseling center personnel, and the principal if appropriate. Please inform all personnel that have the potential to administer medication to students at school of their responsibilities in this matter.

Thank you for your responsiveness and support.
