Common Sense Media is one of the major providers of digital citizenship training in the United States.  JSD Digital Learning Specialists invite you to introduce Common Sense Media to your school community, by selecting a Teacher Leader who will become a Common Sense Educator and then promote the program by involving additional teachers. Funding for this program is provided this year through the Digital Teaching and Learning Grant. Details are included in the attachment.

Attached is the DLM checklist for all special education teachers who are administering the DLM assessment to any of their students for the 2018-2019 school year. Elementary Media Assistants Guidelines


The top priority of elementary media assistants is to administer the school library. Under normal circumstances, they should not be given additional responsibilities outside of the media center. If additional responsibilities are being considered, the area library media specialist should first be contacted to provide an assessment of the library program to determine if the library program is functioning well enough to allow the library assistant to take on additional responsibilities.

All Jordan School District library schedules should be arranged to deliver the following:

  • An open checkout time for students to independently come into the library to exchange books.
  • Library time for each class (recommended time=30 minutes). Library time includes check out time and instruction time (which includes storytime and library curriculum lessons).
  • Book reshelving and maintenance.
  • Two-hour weekly collaboration time to work together to plan book promotions, displays, curriculum scheduling, and district projects.
  • Library upkeep (including processing books and orders, repairs, overdue books reports, etc.)

Also, please be aware that assistants who are scheduled to work more than five (5) hours per day are entitled to a 30-minute duty-free lunch (not included in the 17-hour paid schedule).

Parent Access to Canvas

In our continuing efforts to partner with parents for the academic success of students, Jordan School District is providing parents with access to Canvas to observe their student’s progress. Canvas is the Learning Management System being used throughout the district.

We hope that this resource will:

  • provide parents with more specific information about their student’s curricula, so they have better insight into the work that teachers and students are doing in the classroom
  • provide more meaningful information that may be used to improve conversations concerning academic progress between parents and students

Features in Canvas for parents

When parents access Canvas, they will be able to see:

  • course syllabus
  • course assignments
  • feedback on assignments (if appropriate)
  • grades on individual assignments

IMPORTANT: The total grade in Canvas may be different than the term grade in Skyward. Skyward will continue to be the official record for student grades and all official Jordan School District communication. Parents should continue to use Skyward to monitor their student’s progress in each of the courses.

Administrators,

In last week’s JAM, you received a memo regarding Avoid Deny Defend (ADD) and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) Classified Trainings.  The purpose of this memo is to clarify the intent of the JAM communication.

Training is not required for all classified employees by the end December as previously stated. At this point, there are three options for training classified employees:

Live Trainings:
There are two remaining ADD and TECC live trainings for classified employees.  The first training will be conducted at West Jordan Middle School on Monday, October 1 from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m.  This training is primarily for Nutrition Services employees, but is open to all classified personnel.  The second training will be conducted at Elk Ridge Middle School on Friday, October 26 (grade transmittal day) from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m.  This training is open to all classified personnel who would like to attend.

Online Video Training:
After the live training on October 26, the trainings will be made available online to classified personnel for the purpose of receiving the training at their school.  It is our hope that the edited video will be between 60 and 75 minutes in length.

Possible Additional Training:
A number of options for providing additional training for classified employees are being explored, including suicide prevention training. No details are available yet, but we will be working with the classified employee group (JESPA) to create more professional development options for classified employees.

All full-time classified employees should receive ADD and TECC training, either by attending the live training or by watching the online video once it is available. Although training is not required for part-time employees at this point, you may ask your part-time classified staff to attend the live trainings or watch the training videos once they become available. Employees cannot be required to attend the live training or watch the video outside of work hours without compensation. Again, part-time classified employees are not required to be trained, but can be trained at the principal’s discretion if there is time to do so during work hours or funds at the school level to compensate them for the training.

Each school is asked to report the quarter end account balance and transaction detail with the Apple Volume Purchase Program and return with your bank reconciliation.  If your school has no Apple account, please so indicate and return.

Please include the account balance with Apple on the reconciliation sign off form and print a report or screen shot(s) of the balances and quarterly transactions from Apple’s website.  If you need assistance, please contact your Curriculum Technology Specialist – Bonnie, Deana, Harrison, Nancy, Jay, and Raimee.

Skyward has finally sent a release with the approve and reroute for check requests! As a result we wanted to send out some notification and instructions on what you will see and what you will be allowed to do now. Attached is a one page guide showing screenshots of the new reroute capability and some explanation of how it works.

We are trying to update and improve our processes and believe this will be a big benefit to everyone involved in the check disbursement process. If you have any questions about this please let us know.

Principals:
As you approve your check requests you will now see the third option to approve and reroute a check to another department. So, as you review your check requests please take note of the budget you are charging or notes your admin assistant may have put on the request as these will provide direction of where to reroute requests.

Admin Assistants:
This is great news as you will no longer have to send in paper NPOs for payments out of the Foundation, Special Ed, Title I, etc. We would ask that you work with your principal in some way (note in request, verbal reminder, etc.) to let them know where a given request should be routed to.

DO Departments:
This will change how you see payment requests coming from the elementary schools. Please work with your different department heads to make them aware that checks will now be coming to them through Skyward. As shown in the directions they should see the yellow exclamation icon notifying them of tasks needing to be completed. They will need to check this to review and approve any requests being charged to their respective areas.

Hours Increase for Part-Time Classified Child Care Positions


With the increasing challenge to recruit and retain qualified part-time classified assistants, daycare assistants working in an approved high school child care program are now allowed to work up to 25 hours/week, with principal and CTE approval.

Funding

  • Only approved child care/local funds may be used to increase hours. This program is self-funded/sustaining. 

Restrictions

  • Daycare assistants who work 25 hours/week will not be allowed to substitute teach.
  • Student daycare assistants may not exceed 17 hours/week.

Implementation

  • Submit a change form to HR to increase hours up to 25/week (.625 FTE).

Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) Classroom Kits Distribution, Storage and Accountability


We anticipate that TECC kits will be delivered to your school sometime between October 1 and October 15, 2018.  TECC kits will be delivered directly to the school administration, who will then verify and sign off that the accurate number of kits has been received.

A classroom TECC kit should be distributed to each classroom, computer lab, media center and office (main, attendance, counseling center) and stored in a safe and secure location.  We recommend they be placed with the classroom “Go Kit”, classroom first aid kit, or other accessible area within the classroom.

Teachers are responsible for the safekeeping of their assigned TECC kit.  Please instruct all of your teachers and staff that they may also be accountable to produce the TECC kit, with all of its contents intact, during a random Jordan Safety and Security Assessment (JSSA).

Installation of your school wall-mounted kits will be scheduled and completed through the Facility Services Department.

Schools are responsible to pay the cost of any replacement TECC kits due to theft, damage or loss.

Trainings will be announced via JEM and should also be communicated by Department Directors during their next staff meeting.

Please work with your school’s classified personnel to afford them the opportunity to receive the training while on the clock.

Principals are accountable to maintain appropriate documentation that all classified personnel are trained prior to December 31, 2018.

After October 26, 2018, the ADD and TECC presentations will be available online to be viewed at each school by the administration, licensed and classified personnel at their convenience.  The online presentation will also be available to all new hires, personnel that were unable to attend the live trainings and for retraining on an ongoing basis.

Special Education New Teacher Induction Training


The Special Education Department has scheduled a series of trainings for special educators that are new to Jordan School District. Please release these new special educators so that they may attend these important training opportunities. However, attendance is at the principal’s discretion. Special education will cover the substitute costs for trainings that occur during the school day (Budget code: 1292). If the training occurs after school, the special educators will be paid at inservice rate.
