Jordan School District (JSD) is committed to finding, hiring and retaining the very best employees possible. Jordan School District is currently participating in a trial for Screencastify Pro, a screen recording software for faculty and students. You can sign in to Screencastify by going to screencastify.com and using your Google login and password for the district. This trial will allow teachers and students unlimited time for screen recordings, the ability to save finished videos to Google Drive, and even the option to embed comprehension questions within the videos! On Friday, the Screencastify extension will be made available in both teacher and student Chrome browsers. This is the easiest way to access Screencastify and start using this terrific program. Dear JSD Educators,

The District will open a new elementary school in Herriman beginning in August, 2022. Applications for the Team Lead positions are now being accepted. Additional compensated work for certain positions may be required prior to the beginning of the contract year.

We want to invite all kindergarten teachers to join us for a very special Kindergarten Night Out. McKinley Withers will be joining us to share some great tips and tricks to manage student behavior in the kindergarten classroom. As a special bonus, teachers will be paid to attend this session. Teachers who would like to attend should sign up on JPLS. This session will be held on February 9, from 4:15-5:15 in the ASB Auditorium.

Teachers in grades K-3 are required to complete all training modules for Really Great Reading before the end of the school year. Teacher training links are active for 1 year from the date of the first log in. The first two modules should have been completed prior to the start of the school year. Teachers were paid the full stipend once these two modules were completed, however the expectation was that they would continue to complete the remaining modules throughout the year. The remaining modules were designed to become available as they were needed in the curriculum. This requirement was stated in Literacy Launch and in a JEM on August 25th. Please remind all teachers in grades K-3 to check their training status and complete all modules before their links expire.

Deanna Smith, LCSW, Clinical Outreach Coordinator from the OCD & Anxiety Treatment Center will provide us with a presentation on anxiety through the ages: how symptoms of anxiety and OCD alter throughout stages of development.

Mentoring in Jordan School District is essential to retaining and supporting new teachers in their first three years of teaching. Each year provisional teachers are identified and provided a mentor. Below are a few reminders and updates. 

Reminders:

  • Make sure you know who your lead mentor teacher is. Decide if this individual will remain the lead mentor or if you need to assign a new lead mentor. 
  • Have teachers who are interested in becoming mentors sign up for the mentor training on JPLS. Teachers cannot mentor if they are provisional or if they are not trained. 
  • All mentors will be recertified every 5 years. Teachers will be notified when they need to recertify. Teachers who do not recertify will no longer be able to mentor. 
  • Administrators are to work directly with lead mentors in assigning mentors and mentees. 

Updates:

  • Mentors and mentees must be logging all meetings they have on their shared log. 
  • Mentors, mentees, and lead mentors have clearly defined roles with each contributing to the partnership. 
  • Mentors, mentees, and lead mentors have updated contracts that must be signed at the beginning of the mentoring partnership. 
  • Quarterly surveys are sent out to mentees and mentors to gather information as to how district mentor specialists can provide needed support.
  • Each school needs to have a designated administrator over mentoring at their school. This will facilitate communication between district mentor specialists, teachers, and administration.
  • The administrator over mentoring, at their school, will have specific duties. See attached information.
  • Each school will need to complete the administrator mentor survey indicating which school administrator will be over mentoring.   Mentoring Survey

Foreign Non-Immigrant Student Graduation and Course Selection


Effective immediately, please note the following changes to procedure regarding foreign non-immigrant students (typically referred to as “foreign exchange students” and including students on J-1 or F-1 visas). A revision to Policy AS66 – Non-Resident and Charter School Enrollment is being prepared for Board of Education review and approval. Online documentation at the Planning & Enrollment website will be updated when the policy change has been approved.

Graduation:
Any foreign non-immigrant student who completes their 12th grade year in a District high school and meets all current Utah requirements for graduation is eligible to receive a diploma and to graduate. As part of this process, students will need to provide transcripts from their home country so that transfer credits can be granted; however, even after transfer credits are granted, these students may still need to complete a significant number of make-up credits. The time and expense for make-up credits rest with the student. School staff should assist with this process as they would with any other student.

Foreign non-immigrant students who complete their 12th grade year in a District high school and opt to not receive a diploma may still be recognized by school administration during the graduation program.

Course Selection:
Prior District procedure did not allow foreign non-immigrant students to enroll in Driver Education courses. These students may now elect to participate in Driver Education but assume all responsibility for any additional expense or requirements that may exist due to their visa status.

This change means that foreign non-immigrant students may access the same course opportunities as a typical student. The only exception remains that they may not enroll in fully virtual or online courses. The visa requirements for these students require in-person instruction. The requirements do not prevent them from completing online components or assignments of in-person classes or from virtual learning during health- or weather-related emergencies.

Utah State Senate Bill 150 requires schools to assess students three times per school year (fall, winter, & spring) and inform first, second, and third grade parents/guardians of whether or not their child is reading on grade level. Please use the attached letter templates to send information home to all parents/guardians of students in first, second, and third grades by February 28, 2022.
