Secondary Hiring Timeline for Known Vacancies – November 2018
Secondary schools who have a “known vacancy” for the 2019-20 school year may advertise for that position immediately after consulting with their Administrator of Schools. “Known vacancies” are classified or licensed positions that a school must fill regardless of enrollment or FTE allocation. Examples of a “known vacancy” include Media Specialist, CTE Coordinator, Athletic Director, Band Director, Head Coach/Advisor, Head Custodian, etc.
Principals must post "known vacancies" for one week before hiring. While hiring internal candidates is highly encouraged, principals are authorized to hire from outside the district. Please be reminded that any internal licensed applicants with a "highly effective" JPAS rating must be given the opportunity to interview as per the District's negotiated agreement with JEA.
If you have a position to fill that you believe would qualify as a "known vacancy," please contact your Administrator of Schools. All other positions, including department chairs, can only be filled after FTE has been allocated.

Student Immunization Compliance
We are within the window where students who have missing or incomplete immunization records may be at the end of their original 21-day conditional enrollment period.
There are several options principals should use prior to withdrawing a student from school for lack of completed immunization records:
1 - Directly contact the parent to inform them of the concerns and make sure they are clear about what is needed
2 - Help parents connect with resources for receiving immunizations - you can work with your school nurse
3 - Extend the conditional enrollment period while you work with the family. A school administrator, in collaboration with the school nurse, can extend the conditional enrollment period when it will likely lead to compliance. (HB308 Q & A Document)
4 - Provide instructions and/or computer access for parents who wish to complete the online exemption training and receive the exemption form
5 - Review the student's immunization records on file and USIIS for the most updated immunization information
In extreme cases, if it becomes necessary to withdraw the student from school due to lack of response to the above steps, please discuss with your Administrator of Schools prior to withdrawing the student.

Parent Access to Canvas 2018-19
Parent Access to Canvas
In our continuing efforts to partner with parents for the academic success of students, Jordan School District is providing parents with access to Canvas to observe their student’s progress. Canvas is the Learning Management System being used throughout the district.
We hope that this resource will:
- provide parents with more specific information about their student’s curricula, so they have better insight into the work that teachers and students are doing in the classroom
- provide more meaningful information that may be used to improve conversations concerning academic progress between parents and students
Features in Canvas for parents
When parents access Canvas, they will be able to see:
- course syllabus
- course assignments
- feedback on assignments (if appropriate)
- grades on individual assignments
IMPORTANT: The total grade in Canvas may be different than the term grade in Skyward. Skyward will continue to be the official record for student grades and all official Jordan School District communication. Parents should continue to use Skyward to monitor their student’s progress in each of the courses.
